I had a smashing time at the zoo today, I was the first person in and headed straight for the Cats, I first saw my favourite Tiger, Zambar. He was sat in his normal spot, upon the hill. He looked quite chilled, he was watching a keeper feeding the Howler Monkeys. He did then however after a while, get up and start pacing which is what he normally does. He does this, because in the wild he would have a huge territory with two or three females, he would patrol his area watching out for rival males and mate with the resident females. Zoo's however cannot replicate the natural area for a Tiger, hence the reason he paces.
After spending ten minutes watching Zambar, I then moved onto the Lions. There is four Lions at the zoo. A male named Wallace, he is five and a half, he was born at Longleat Safari Park and he moved to Blackpool Zoo in August 2008 taking over from the Old Pride. The old Pride was a male and a female, the male was called Negus he was 22 when he died in January 2008, his mate Zoe died in 2005/06. There are three females in the current pride, twin sisters Jasmine and Gillian born in 1999 and there half sister Rachel, who was born in 2001. They had three female cubs in 2009, all now at Longleat where there father originated from. When I arrived the three females were sleeping by one of the viewing huts. One female was awake and had there eye on me, the male was sleeping on the 'Arch' platform. The other two females were asleep until a small child awoke them. Wallace awoke later in the day and started patrolling his area, he was watching a five year old child and roared straight into his face, the child however, didn't seem phased and just laughed. I filmed Wallace roaring, then when everybody left Wallace looked at me, and roared straight into my face! It was a tremendous experience!
